The Indian unit gained 18 paise to Rs 44.24 as against the U. S. currency during early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, broadening its gains for the fifth consecutive trading session on account of capital inflows and a tautening trend in the Indian bourses.
The Indian currency had surged by 17 paise to mark its closure at almost a five month peak of Rs 44.42/43 against the U. S. currency during the last session on the back of heavy capital inflows amid the sale of U. S. currency by exporters and banking institutions.
Forex traders stated that steady capital inflows in addition to the superior opening in the stock exchange continued to keep the reaction of the Indian unit sturdy.
Besides, steadiness in other Asian units as compared to the U. S. dollar also backed up the rupee.
The 30-share index BSE Sensex surged 106.61 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 19,793.43 during opening trade today.
